On 18 to 20 of June, WAMS hosted a 3 day forum for GP Registrars. This is an opportunity for Doctors to learn about how an Aboriginal Medical Service operates and where Doctors can work with Aboriginal staff and other allied health professionals in a Primary Health care environment Click here to view relevant pages from WAMS Dental Consultant, Sandra Meihubers' presentation Student Placement, University of Sydney WAMS recently worked with the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney, to host two dental students as part of their Extramural Community Practice Education Program. Neil Frizzo and Nathan Louis are in the final year of the Bachelor of Dentistry course, and came to WAMS for two weeks in July 2007. WAMS employed Dr Lester Clifford as a locum dentist for these two weeks. Lester has his own private dental practice in Sydney, and works one day a week as a supervisor in student clinics, so he was well suited to help the students while offering high quality dental care to patients. The University team worked extremely well with WAMS staff, and everyone enjoyed this experience. In fact we started getting phone calls saying " Can I get in to see the students, I hear they're really good". Great stuff. The dental team also visited the school at Collarenebri one day to provide dental education and screening of the pupils. WAMS dental staff and the school principal will work together to ensure those kids needing care will get in to see the dentist or dental therapist at WAMS. Finally, some words from Nathan: "I don't think I said thank you to you for having us at WAMS. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience! we worked hard and so did the girls! I feel like and Neil.... To Whom It May Concern, I am writing in regards to the Extramural Community Practice Education Program (ECPEP) which ran throughout the month of July for final year dental students. Myself, and one other final year dental student, attended the Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service (WAMS) for a 2 week program under the supervision of Dr Lester Clifford. Under the guidance of Dr Clifford, I found the WAMS clinic offered a supportive and enriching work environment and throughout the course of our stay I was able to develop my knowledge and skills in a diverse range of clinical dentistry. Furthermore, I was also able to experience and gain an appreciation of many of the issues related to the provision of oral health care in rural New South Wales. Overall I can truthfully say that undertaking the ECPEP has been the most enjoyable and rewarding experience I have had while in dental school, which I am sure is a sentiment that my colleague would share. I would have no hesitation in encouraging other students undertaking a rural program to consider WAMS. I would like to congratulate and thank everyone involved with organizing and facilitating my ECPEP experience and hope that the program can continue to be successful in the future. Yours sincerely, |
